Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Scan Your CVS Card

| February 25, 2010

img_8664

We can’t say this enough if you walk into a CVS store, scan your card at the CVS kiosk. Even if you are not going to purchase anything, always scan your cards. Yes, cards, we carry two cards for our household. One household can have two CVS Extra Care Cards. You and your significant other can each have a card. Doing this will double your savings in ECBs (Extra Care Bucks) and double your ability to get your stockpile in place.

We received the two ExtraCare coupons you see above when we scanned our card at the CVS kiosk this week. One was for $5 off $15 and $4 off Huggies box of diapers. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY. Combine this with the Huggies manufacture coupon we can use all three of these at CVS or at our Fairhope Publix store.

Publix Box Diapers $19.99
-$5 off $15 CVS coupon
-$4 CVS coupon
-$2 manufacture coupon
Final Price: $8.99

Here are some additional tips for shopping at CVS:

  • Purchase a CVS Green Green Tag for $.99, attach it to your reusable bag, and scan with your CVS card to get $1 ECB for every forth time you use your reusable shopping bag and scan your card. You can find these tags on the end caps or located near the register.
  • Follow CVS_Extra on Twitter and get a secret discount code for 25% off “nearly everything” on CVS.com.
    • Did you know that you can use your ECB bucks and ECB coupons when ordering products on line at CVS.com? Use your coupons and rewards when you shop online. Here is the information from the site:If you are an ExtraCare cardholder, you know just how rewarding it can be to use the card every time you shop. And now you can take advantage of your Extra Bucks® when you shop online. In your Shopping Cart, click on the Use Coupons/ExtraCare Rewards button at the bottom of the page to apply online coupons and/or ExtraCare Rewards to your purchase. Just enter the relevant codes and your ExtraCare card number in the appropriate section of the Rewards and Coupons page. The coupon value cannot exceed the total value of merchandise in your Shopping Cart.
    • ECBs will roll over. You can use a ECB to pay for a transaction and receive ECBs for the items you purchased.
    • ECBs, store coupons, and manufacturer coupons can be stacked and used in one transaction.
    • If the cashier has the time, you can do more than one transaction in your trip and use the ECBs to pay for the next purchase.
    • CVS gives you back 2% on your purchases (double bucks going on now). Every quarter your ECBs will print after your purchase receipt.
    • Make sure you have updated your CVS cards with your email address, we recieve $X off $XX coupons by email 2-3 times a month.  We love using these at our local Publix store.
    • You can print your ECB coupons on your online account.
    • ECBs are treated as cash in CVS stores but they must be greater than the purchase amount, no change can be given. ECBs also have an expiration date of 3-4 weeks.
    • Always offer up the store coupons first then the manufactures coupons. When shopping at CVS always hand the cashier your CVS card first then CVS dollar off transaction coupons, CVS store coupons/manufacturer coupons, and then finally your ECBs.
    • Click here to get more information about how ECBs work.
    • Our Fairhope Publix store will not take ECBs but they will take the ExtraCare Coupons and  $X off $xx coupons.

    $.01 Happy

    | February 23, 2010

    img_8659

We can not wait to surprise a friend with this Happy. The best part of this is the appreciation our friend will have not only to receive the Happy but that we only paid one red penny for it (not including tax of course). She is a “coupon lady” as well.

Here is the deal from Rite Aid:
    NYC Mascara $3.99 B1G1 $.01
    -B1G1 March All You
    Final Price: $.01

For those of you who are new to Frugal Fairhope and don’t have a clue what a  “Happy” could be, keep reading.

If you get anything out of Frugal Fairhope we hope that it is not just to get the best deals but to give back to your community. The smallest thing could mean a lot to one person.

“You Can’t Help Everyone Everywhere, But You Can Help Someone Somewhere”. ~Felipe, Biggest Looser

This statement sums up the entire purpose of why we started Frugal Fairhope.

We want to help as many people as we can.

“Rough economic times” or not we are here to make an impact on someone’s life.

Post by post, coupon by coupon, freebie by freebie…saving that $.50 to getting a smile on your face or when you open the mailbox and find something there besides bills. A “Happy” (gift) as my 99 year old great grandmother Mamo use to put it. She loved getting a “Happy”. She was such a caring person that she wanted to re-gift the “Happy” and give it back to the original person or to someone new. It was almost like she wanted to share the happiness with everyone.

Frugal Fairhope is our “Happy” to you and we hope that you will share it with everyone you meet.

Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Inside the Box/Bag

    | February 23, 2010

    img_8657

Are you a little confused with how all this works? It can be overwhelming at first but you can get this. It is just a different way to think and use coupons. Today’s shopping trip at Target is a simple way to explain how to use coupons in combination with gift card offers to get the best deal possible. We printed the Target coupons and found the others from the outside of a box of cookies and inside a bag of cat food. Remember you can use one manufacture coupon per item. We combined the B2G1 coupon with two more $1 coupons for a total of three coupons for the three items we purchased.

Here is what we bought today at Target:
    2 Purina Kitten Chow $3.60
    Purina Cat Chow $2.60
-Used 2 $1 Target’s Printable Grocery Coupons (manufacture coupons with Target logo)
-B2G1 coupon found inside of bag previously purchased
Out of Pocket:  $1.73 each if we had stopped there…

    img_8658

Now let’s back this up and try and put this all together so we can understand how we got the best possible deal just using manufacture coupons. If we had found Target store coupons for the Purina or Keebler products we could have used those as well (one per item).

On February 18th we purchase the following products:
5 Keebler Fudge Shoppe Cookies $1.52

-Used 2 $1/2 coupon found inside a box of cookies
    Out of Pocket: $5.60

Received $5 Target Gift Card from purchase of 5 Keebler products. We used that $5 Target Gift Card to purchase cat food today:

    2 Purina Kitten Chow $3.60
    Purina Cat Chow $2.60
-Used 2 $1 Target’s Printable Grocery Coupons (manufacture coupons)
-B2G1 coupon found inside of bag previously purchased
-$5 Target Gift Card from previous purchase

    Out of pocket $.20

So to summarize, we paid $5.80 for 3 bags of cat food and 5 bags of cookies that is $.83 each!

Always take a good look at a box or bag of products before you throw them in the trash, you never know what you will find.

Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Saving Money Without Coupons

    | February 22, 2010

Obviously the best way to save money is to shop the sales and clip coupons for products that you normally buy. We understand that sometimes that is just not possible for every person’s situation.  We are reaching out to those of you that don’t have the time because of a high stressful job, tons of kids running around, or simply just don’t want to do it. Well, we have good news for you; you can save on your grocery bill without clipping a single coupon. Oh, and those of you who are using coupons, you might want to keep reading and use these tips on top of your coupon clipping.

There are at least two types of people that could benefit from How to Save Money Without Coupons:

No Time To Clip? Clip coupons, is not for everyone. Clipping coupons can be time consuming, it takes time to clip, match, file, then shop week after week. If you just don’t have the time or don’t want to clip coupons keep reading.

Rural Shopper This is a shopper who lives in a rural area and may not have the means or the choices some of us “city folks” have. The closest grocery store is very expensive (no competition) and the closest Walmart could be 45 minutes away or more.

If you are one of these, you may not think you can save money on your groceries. We think you can, here is how:

    1. Make a List and Stick To It – Seriously, if it is not on the list, don’t buy it. No matter how loud your kids are screaming for it. If your little one insist on having a “bite” of the banana or Goldfish as you walk by, bring food with you to the grocery store for snacks. Our little one cannot resist the grapes, we literally have to avoid that section and sneak it into the cart when the little one is not looking. Creating a distraction with other food, her second favorite banana slices also helps us avoid buying things that are not on our list because they are not on sale.  This leads us to our second tip.
    2. Shop The Sales – We are going back to our grandmother days, they shopped the sales. If chicken is on sale this week, “honey we are eating chicken every night this week and leftovers on the weekend”. The front page of the grocery store ads typically lists the best deals, but not always. Know your price points so you don’t get fooled by the brightly colored ads or “1/2 off fluff”.
    3. Create a Price Point List – If you are shopping at Walmart, take a little time when you get home and type your purchases into an Excel spreadsheet. Then place that price point list in your wallet so that you can refer to it when you are not sure if that B2G1 seafood is really a good deal. We created our price points for meat from Sam’s Club so we can keep track of what is a good deal and what is just “fluff”.
    4. Avoid Becoming a Brand Snob – So you are saving time by not clipping coupons, give yourself some flexibility on brands. If you family does not have issues with using any types of products, go ahead and buy the cheaper store brand. Why spend more money on that expensive jar of spaghetti sauce because that is what we always buy, when for a couple dollars in spices you can dress it up to be exactly the same flavor, maybe even better. We are label readers, if we find an expensive product on sale that we like we read the ingredients and duplicate the recipe at home with a cheaper brand. A good example is Quaker Oatmeal; the flavored oatmeal can be made at home with a simple addition of brown sugar, raisins and some pecans. Yummy! Another example of this for eating out is Olive Garden Alfredo Sauce, Google these words and you will come up with the exact recipe on the internet. There are tons of sites out there that will give you the recipes for all your favorite restaurants.
    5. Loyalty Cards – Use those shopping cards every time you shop at those stores. Don’t forget to sign up for UPROMISE and Save for College when you register and use those cards.
    6. Butcher BFF – Make your butcher your new best friend. Try and find out when you store typically places the meat on sale or when they mark meat as “Manager Special”. We have found that the aka Piggly Wiggly in Foley marks their meat down on Wednesday mornings.
    7. Make One Shopping Trip - This is not only a money saver because you are planning your meals and avoiding those $97.98 forgot the toothpaste runs to the grocery store but a huge time saver as well. Think about what meals you have prepared for the past couple months. They are pretty much the same right? Typically things like seafood, chicken or steak and vegetable and/or starch, turkey, ground beef recipes like meat loaf, spaghetti, vegetable night…see what we are getting at? Think about it, you are probably serving the same reliable recipes month after month? Shopping for the month will save you time, gas, and probably a little sanity by shopping only once a month. Instead of the 1-2 hour shopping trips once a week with kids in tow, try shopping for 2-3 hours without the kids. If you try this method you may find that you are using all the food you have in the pantry and freezer by the end of the month.  This is also a great idea for those of you who do clip coupons.
    8. Register Watching – Try and place items on the belt before the cashier gets to scanning. This way you can watch carefully what is being rung up and if the price is correct. We cannot tell you how many times we have caught an error in pricing (especially at Walmart) or we accidentally grabbed the 14oz instead of the 16oz can that was on sale. Closely watching that register for the correct prices can be an important key to saving money.

As we have mentioned the best way to saving money is to clip coupons but when you can’t or won’t you can still save money off your grocery bill if you will use some of these tips.

Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Staples Rewards

    | February 19, 2010

    img_8648

$61 in rewards from December purchase of batteries, sharpies, highlighters and paper purchase. $6 in rewards for 2 ink cartridges (ours and a friends).

    img_8653

Our toner costs us $79.99 every quarter, we used the Staples Rewards to pay for the toner each quarter. This quarter we were out of pocket $14.09 (including tax). Even though coupons are about 70% of what we print, we don’t just print coupons. We save well over $26 in groceries a month and we take advantage of the reams of paper for $1.

Staples Rewards could not get any easier, we received batteries, sharpies, and highlighters for free and got back a percentage of our paper and toner purchase. Spent $50+ in products received $61 in a store credit (batteries, sharpies, highlighters), then purchased toner with the store credit. We received an additional $6 for recycling our ink cartridges.

The Staples Rewards program is completely automated, no sending in receipts or entering anything on line. Just scan your Staples Rewards card for every purchase and when you recycle your toner.

Staples Rewards – Earn 10% back by mail in form of a store credit/check when you purchase qualified purchases, ink and toner, case and ream paper and Copy & Print Center purchases. This credit/check can only be used at Staples. “Staples Rewards are mailed within 30 days of the end of the calendar quarter. Redeem your rewards online at staples.com, over the phone at 1-800-333-3330 or in any Staples store by the expiration date”. This does not require you to go on line to apply for the rewards. The rewards are tied to your rewards card and are credited automatically if you use your rewards card at the time of purchase.

“You can recycle ANY ink or toner cartridges, up to 10 per calendar month per customer and receive $3 back in Staples Rewards per cartridge. Limit one Staples Rewards account per address. We will recycle additional cartridges but rewards will only be issued for 10 per calendar month per customer. Your Ink Recycling reward will arrive each month, separately from your standard Staples Rewards statement.”

Here are some tips to printing coupons:

    • Printing coupons from the internet is not that costly as long as you are printing in black and white ONLY
    • Set your printer on the lowest toner saver possible
    • Test your toner on the lowest setting for a coupon you don’t care about. Make sure the bar code is clear and that the small print is readable and not blurry. You could even take that coupon to any store’s customer service desk with the product and ask if they will test it for you.
    • Don’t print everything you see, only print the coupons that you will need or want. You can always go back and print them later. If they are not available so be it. We think this is a lot better than printing and throwing away paper and ink at the end of the month.
    • Don’t print pdfs right away, save them on your desktop for safe keeping. Traffic to the coupon may lead the manufacture to remove the link to the pdf.

Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Coupon Binders

    | February 16, 2010

There is no right or wrong way to organize your coupons. You have to pick a path that works for you and it may take several attempts to settle on what works for you. We posted about organizing coupons back in August and this seems to be a very popular topic in our Free Frugal Fairhope Coupon Workshops so we thought we would bring this post forward (see below). We were surfing this morning and ran across a potential coupon binder that may be of some interest to some of you, It has two binder rings!

41onp9oo6bl_ss350_We love Bettsie and are settled with our coupon organization but this could be very tempting. One side of this binder could be used for grocery coupons and the other for household coupons. Can you think of other possibilities?

Here is the link for more information about the Caseit Dual500 Dual Ring Zipper Binder, Extra Large There are several colors and it includes free shipping. Here is a link to the entire selection of Caseit Dual Binders. If this is too big for you, here is the link to a smaller version of this that runs around $19+: Case-it Dual 100, 2 sets of 1 1/2 inch Round rings, 2 hold down pages and pencil pouch.

What is great about ordering from Amazon is that shipping is free for orders over $25, click here for a good price Business Card Holders for only $5.99 which you could add to the order to get to $25. We paid this much for the ones we purchased locally.

In our minds there are at least three levels of coupon organization:

    1. Envelopes
    2. Binder or Index Box
    3. Advanced Binder or Index Box

Here are some tips for these three levels of coupon organization:

    Envelopes

    1. Create envelopes with store names on them and put the coupons for that weeks deal inside.
    2. Create envelopes for product categories and take those with you shopping.
    3. You could also purchase a small cloth envelope coupon organizer but chances are that you will grow out of that envelope faster than you think. So we would go with the cheap way and use paper envelopes until you find your own way.

FFF Tip: If you tape the ends of your envelope, the envelope will last longer.

    Binder System or Index Box

    1. Using a cloth or vinyl binder with business card sleeves is a great way to get your coupons organized.  Using Business Card Holders is really handy to view the expiration dates. Folding the coupons so that you can see the value, product, and expiration date will make it easier when the coupons start to expire at the end of the month.
    2. A plastic photo album with black or white pages would also be a great way to organize your coupons.
    3. Use product categories to make labels for your binder or just place the coupons in the particular categories. See this link for a list of Bettsie’s categories.
    4. Using a index paper box with labels would also work as well. We were using this at one time but found the plastic box was too cumbersome for us to take into the store.

    Advanced Binder System

    1. Graduate to a large binder with business card sleeves, plastic paper sleeves, and pockets. We have seen some binders with baseball card sleeves. We purchase our business card sleeves at Staples. We found some card holders in the Foley Target store near the baseball card section. We found these are not as well made as the business card holders and don’t seem to last as long.
    2. We also use envelopes for each store, if we are going to make a quick trip inside the store. We place marked envelopes in the binder pockets.
    3. Some stores will not have all the items we are looking for that we can get for free. We also keep a pocket to store our coupons for free items.
    4. Using the envelopes as a grocery list is a great trick that works for us if we know we need specific items. We will pull the coupons from the binder inside that store’s envelope and look inside the envelope before getting in line.
    5. We never felt the need to create a coupon database of the coupons we have in our binder (we would never have the time for that). But hey, what ever works for you go for it.
    6. We mix in the competitor coupons with the manufacturer coupons, the tear pads… in coupon categories so there is no guessing just a quick look if we can do a 2 way coupon stacking deal.
    7. If there is a coupon that we have printed with a short expiration date we use paper sleeves to store a coupon in the appropriate category. No need to waste time cutting if we are not going to use the coupon if there is not a sale.
    8. We have created an OCF File (Only in Case of Free) that is in the back of our coupon binder. The OCF coupons are sorted alphabetically.
    9. We have seen others that organize by not cutting coupons from the Sunday paper but place the inserts in a paper sleeve and date them. They keep a list of the coupons they have on hand, organized by date and publisher (RP, SS, GM, or P&G). We have even seen a photo of someone’s closet where they keep the Sunday inserts on each shelf. This is a very interesting and creative way to organize coupons.

We hope some of these tips have helped and inspired you to create your own system. As everything in life you will grow and find the best path that works for you.

We would love to hear how you organize your coupons and what progress you have made in organizing your coupons.

    Walmart 2/14 Deals

    | February 13, 2010

There is a huge difference between region to region and store to store prices at Walmart. Walmart will change their pricing from day to day and will not always post a weekly circular, but when they do you will find it here on Frugal Fairhope. Because there is no consistency in the sale prices, Frugal Fairhope will only post advertised deals for our local Walmart.

These deals are good from 2/14-2/20 at the Fairhope Walmart store. Here are some tips for shopping at Walmart:

    • Walmart prices vary from region to region and sometimes from store to store. The Daphne Walmart store will have different prices than the Fairhope store and they are within 2 miles of each other. Check your local store circular for sales and pricing.
    • Walmart stores will not price match to other Walmart stores.
    • The Fairhope Walmart and Schillinger Road Walmart in Mobile will take competitor coupons for products. They will not take the $5 off $$$ coupons. The Fairhope store will take one coupon per item, the Schillinger store will take a competitor and a manufacture coupon for one item.
    • All Walmart stores will price match to actual prices. Walmart will not price match B1G1 sales or sales that include a rewards card, for example CVS and Winn-Dixie sales.
    • Here is the link to Walmart’s coupon policy: http://walmartstores.com/7655.aspx.
