Don’t Toss Expired Coupons

| August 31, 2010

The first of the month can be a sad day for “coupon ladies & gentlemen” across the country. This is the day when the majority of coupons have expired. Millions of dollars in coupons are tossed in the trash.

If you have been to our Free Frugal Fairhope Coupon Workshops you have heard us talk about another use for those expired coupons. Military bases overseas can use expired coupons in their commissary for up to 6 months after the expiration date.

We have spent some time overseas, and we can tell you from personal experience it is not cheap. The military bases commissary offers some discounts that can help with the grocery cost but the cost of living in general is expensive. Like those of us living state side grocery costs are soaring with no end in sight, so every little bit counts.

Sending coupons overseas is pretty simple and your are sending the package to a U.S. territory so doesn’t require extra international postage. You can get all the instructions including how and which base to adopt at the Overseas Coupon Program, www.ocpnet.org.

Here are a few tips from the site:

  • Sort your coupons by food and non food (we especially liked the calorie tip)
  • We placed our coupons in two Ziploc bags (see photo)
  • Don’t send anything that has expired over 2 months, by the time it gets there they may not be able to use it
  • Keep the package open until you get to the post office in case it is cheaper to send your package by parcel post
  • Don’t forget about completing the customs form
  • Tally the coupons value by weight or counting the values (optional)

There are several bases to adopt and the site is self serving. Fill out an on line form telling them how much you donated and the base the coupons were sent. This helps them keep track of what base is in need.

We have saved all of our expired coupons from this year and this month will be our first experience with shipping expired coupons overseas. We plan to send out a shipment of expired coupons every two months. Our next shipment will be in April. If you are interested in joining us in the Frugal Fairhope Expired Coupons Drive, send an email to Frances @ Frugal Fairhope .com (no spaces) and we will send you the details of the drop off. All coupons must already be clipped, sorted, and placed in Ziploc bags to be mailed.

Watch Those Target Receipts

| August 30, 2010

We saw this on Associated Press last week but did think it was relevant for our area. Well, unfortunately it has arrived and here is the proof from Reader R… who made this purchases in Mobile, Alabama store on Saturday.

image2

As you can see from the receipt Reader R… used a $4/2 coupon for salsa, which was on sale for $3.44 each. Reader R should have paid $1.44 each ($2.88 total) but instead Reader R… paid $1.72 each ($3.44 total). A total of 4 jars were purchased, two $4/2 coupons were used, this is a $1.12 ERROR!

3

There were some other coupon errors as well, several Wish Bone coupons were not applied, and other manufacture coupons were scanned but not credited.  This may seem not worth the bother for such a small amount, but from what we can tell this has been going on for a while and Target has been notified of this.

Keep in mind that all stores get reimbursed from the manufacture the full coupon amount from the purchase and stores also negotiated sales and store coupon reimbursement with the manufacture as well. So Target is not only making money on every coupon redeemed ($.08 over the value) they are REALLY making money on not giving the full coupon credit to the consumer.  We wonder if they are counting on the fact that most consumers would not return to the store with their receipts? We will tell you that Reader R… is on the way to the store today and we would be as well.

Here is the article:

Target Accused Of Not Giving Full Value On Coupons

Amy Gunderson, of Oakdale, said she started noticing that Target stores weren’t redeeming her coupons to the full amount.

Amy Gunderson has four good reasons to clip coupons — her kids.

“I have two in college this year, and I’m going back, and I’ll have another one starting college next year, and one two years after that,” Gunderson said.

The Oakdale mom started clipping coupons last year. She wasn’t alone. According to Inmar, a transaction processing firm, coupon use jumped 27 percent in 2009.

Back in June, Gunderson started noticing something strange when she shopped at Target. She wasn’t getting the full value listed on some of her coupons.

“At first I thought, ‘What the heck?’ So you know, I went a couple more times, and I had great cashiers. They fixed it for me. They hadn’t seen it before either, so they didn’t know what they were looking at,” she said.

She shopped around and found she had the same problem at other Target stores but not at other retailers.

Gunderson complained in person and on the phone and even started talking to other coupon clippers she met online. She found out she wasn’t the only one getting shorted at Target.

“It’s happened across the country,” she said. “Across Minnesota, different stores. It’s not just local. It’s not just at the Targets here.”

It wasn’t an easy decision for Gunderson to talk about Target coupon problems. She didn’t want to get the retailer in trouble.

“If one time, someone would have said, ‘We’re aware that there is a problem, and we’re trying to fix it, I would have been, ‘You know what? That’s fine. I will keep an eye on it until it’s fixed,’” she said.

That never happened.

“It’s just frustrating to go up to customer service, and they’re all very nice, no one’s ever rude,” she said. However, “it’s always the first time they’ve heard of it.”

On Monday, Gunderson had a coupon for $4 off if she bought 10 Weight Watchers Smart Ones meals. A WCCO-TV crew went along with her to the North St. Paul Target to redeem that coupon. Her receipt shows — Target only took $1.99 off her bill, not $4.

“It all adds up, and they’ll get the full four dollars,” she said.

Gunderson’s advice to Target shoppers: Look closely or risk not getting the full value.

“If you’re not paying attention,” she said, “you’re not getting the value of the coupon you’re submitting.”

Target said it didn’t know about the coupon problem until WCCO called them. Reached by phone on Monday afternoon, Target spokesperson Jenn Glass said, “We are working on a fix. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused our guests. They can certainly return to a store with receipts if they didn’t receive the complete coupon amount.”

When asked if Target received the extra coupon money that customers weren’t getting, Glass said she could not comment.

Check your receipts and know the value of your coupons before you leave the store!

Did you see that pig fly by the window?

| August 26, 2010

Walgreen’s has published a coupon policy!!! Hard to believe, we had to double check the link that it wasn’t fake. Click here to see for yourself.

We will add this to the New Here? How Does This Work page of other coupon policies. Remember to ALWAYS carry a copy of store’s coupon policies in your coupon binder.

Now that we are armed with Walgreen’s coupon policy, it is time to talk to the Walgreen’s store manager who turned us down last week for stacking coupons…. long boring story of how some Walgreen’s stores have not met customer satisfaction in a LONG time. We are sure you have had the same experiences so we will not bore you with our details.

Here is the policy from the website.

As a customer-focused retailer, Walgreens encourages the use of coupons by our customers in our retail stores, in accordance with the following guidelines.

Guidelines:

General

  • All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier at the time of checkout.
  • Walgreens does not accept expired coupons.
  • Coupons and their face value cannot be exchanged for cash or gift cards.
  • Competitor coupons are not accepted at Walgreens.
  • Walgreens cannot accept coupons for items not carried in our stores.
  • The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register RewardsTM manufacturer coupons, may not exceed the number of items in the transaction. The total value of the coupons may not exceed the value of the transaction. Sales tax must be paid, if required by state law.
  • Any coupon offer not covered in these guidelines will be accepted at the discretion of Walgreens management.

Sale Items

  • Walgreens will accept manufacturer coupons for an item that is on sale.
  • In the event that any item’s selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.

Multiple Coupons

  • When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.
  • The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).
  • When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple identical coupons for multiple qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased.

Buy One, Get One Free Coupons

  • When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.
  • Sales tax must be paid for any Buy One, Get One Free coupon offers, if required by applicable state laws.

Internet/Print at Home Coupons

  • Walgreens accepts valid internet/print at home coupons.
