Reader Walgreen’s Coupon Policy Question

| September 19, 2010

Reader H… Question:

I was wondering if you could help me with what you know about the Walgreen’s coupon policy. Last night I purchased 5 items. I had a manufacture coupon for each. I also had a store coupon for 3 items which they would not let me use. I have read their coupon policy and it is a bit confusing. It states only one coupon per the number of items you are purchasing and it also states that you can use one store and one manufacture per item.

Of course there were several people in line behind me and the cashier dismissed my questioning. Needless to say, I ended up paying a lot more money for stockpile items than I would have liked. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks for all you do.

Frugal Fairhope Answer:

Let’s look at the parts of the policy and break it down:

The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register Rewards manufacturer coupons, may not exceed the number of items in the transaction.”

Walgreen’s Register Rewards (RRs) are considered manufacture coupons (stated on the top of the RR) and Walgreen’s will not let you use more than one manufacture coupon per item. The way around this is to buy a $.33 piece of candy (filler) if you are going to use a manufacture coupon and pay for your transaction with RRs. For example we cannot purchased one bar of soap for $2, used $1 soap manufacture coupon and pay for it with $1 RR. In this example we have one product and two “manufacture” coupons. If we added a piece of $.33 candy (filler) this would go through because we now have 2 items and 2 manufacture coupons.

Here is another part of Walgreen’s coupon policy regarding multiple coupons:

“When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer. The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).”

This means they will take a manufacture coupon/RRs AND a Walgreen’s coupon for one single item. The second sentence tells you cannot get overage, if there is an overage they will adjust it down to zero.

Using the example you mentioned your coupons should have been accepted, you had 5 items, 5 manufacture coupons and 3 store coupons (you could have used up to 5 store coupons with this transaction).

We would recommend going back to the store with your receipt and coupons and return the items or ask for the value of coupons.
