Merry Christmas

Ring out the old ring in the new, Ring happy bells across the snow;

The year is going let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife,

Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners purer laws.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;

Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free; the larger heart, the kindlier hand;

Ring out the darkness of the land,

Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Do You Have a Stockpiled Gift Closet?

| December 17, 2010

Stockpiling shouldn’t stop with groceries, especially if you have Little Ones in the house.  If you are a Grand parent, Aunt or Uncle you might want to think about stockpiling future gifts for those Little Ones.  We do our best to avoid those last minute need to buy a gift Walmart $19.95+ shopping trip. We have all done it, we have purchased a gift at the last minute and paid full price. Keep an eye out throughout the year, and stockpile those gifts. We stockpile future gifts for The Little One’s friends, teachers, and family members. Here are some tips for stockpiling your gift closet:

  • Write down the names of everyone you purchase gifts for throughout the year and hang it in your closet (use a chalk or white board purchased at a garage sale)
  • If buying for Little Ones friends write down the ages as well
  • Leave space on your list to mark what you gave and when so you will not repeat the same gift
  • Keep it generic, avoid boy and girl gifts if you can
  • Keep an eye out for gifts that range several years, board games, sidewalk chalk, clay and play dough are great examples of a generic Little One gifts
  • Use Swagbucks and MyPoints for gift card gifts for the adults
  • Keep an extra supply of generic gifts for unexpected events
  • Stockpile small gifts to put together for gift baskets (purchase baskets from a garage sale)
  • If you find that you have some leftover gifts that are not age appropriate you can always sell on eBay or donate to charity
  • Stock pile your cards, gift bags, wrapping paper and tissue
  • Wrapping gifts ahead of time (mark them well) will save you time

Not every gift has to be purchased. Sometimes the best gifts are homemade items. Times have changed and some of your lives may have changed dramatically this year. Taking care of yourself and your family comes before anything on this earth. This includes gift giving, If you are in this situation have the conversation with your family. Suggest or inform that this year you are only buying for The Little Ones or drawing names for gifts. Most families are already doing this and will understand.

A store bought gift will be forgotten and eventually thrown out but creating memories with family and friends is something that will last forever.

Don’t Toss Expired Coupons Reminder

| December 9, 2010

img_8705

The first of the month can be a sad day for “coupon ladies & gentlemen” across the country. This is the day when the majority of coupons have expired. Millions of dollars in coupons are tossed in the trash.

If you have been to our Free Frugal Fairhope Coupon Workshops you have heard us talk about another use for those expired coupons. Military bases overseas can use expired coupons in their commissary for up to 6 months after the expiration date.

We have spent some time overseas, and we can tell you from personal experience it is not cheap. The military bases commissary offers some discounts that can help with the grocery cost but the cost of living in general is expensive. Like those of us living state side grocery costs are soaring with no end in sight, so every little bit counts.

Sending coupons overseas is pretty simple and your are sending the package to a U.S. territory so doesn’t require extra international postage. You can get all the instructions including how and which base to adopt at the Overseas Coupon Program, www.ocpnet.org.

Here are a few tips from the site:

  • Sort your coupons by food and non food (we especially liked the calorie tip)
  • We placed our coupons in two Ziploc bags (see photo)
  • Don’t send anything that has expired over 2 months, by the time it gets there they may not be able to use it
  • Keep the package open until you get to the post office in case it is cheaper to send your package by parcel post
  • Don’t forget about completing the customs form
  • Tally the coupons value by weight or counting the values (optional)

There are several bases to adopt and the site is self serving. Fill out an on line form telling them how much you donated and the base the coupons were sent. This helps them keep track of what base is in need.

We have saved all of our expired coupons from this year and this month will be our first experience with shipping expired coupons overseas. We plan to send out a shipment of expired coupons every two months. Our next shipment will be in April. If you are interested in joining us in the Frugal Fairhope Expired Coupons Drive, send an email to Frances @ Frugal Fairhope .com (no spaces) and we will send you the details of the drop off. All coupons must already be clipped, sorted, and placed in Ziploc bags to be mailed.
