Spanish Fort Publix Store

| May 31, 2011

SPANISH FORT, Alabama — Work at the Eastern Shore Centre is progressing on the site of a future Publix Super Market, and construction may soon begin on a bowling alley planned for the shopping development.

This week workers are expected to begin pouring concrete footers for the structure, according to Dwaine Stevens, a media and communications manager with the grocery chain.

Drainage work at the site of the grocery store began earlier this month, according to Spanish Fort Building Official Bruce Renkert.

Stevens said it is too early to give an exact opening date for the 54,000-square-foot store, but indicated it would be toward the end of the year.

“Once the groundbreaking takes place, we generally open nine months later,” Stevens said last week. The store is being constructed just north of Belk Department Store on a tract north of Eastern Shore Drive and west of Eastern Shore Boulevard. The shopping center is near Ala. 181 and U.S. 31.

The Lakeland, Fla., grocer has 45 stores in Alabama. Once open, the Spanish Fort location will be the chain’s fifth store in Baldwin, Steven said.

Renkert last week said he had not seen any progress yet on a family entertainment center also planned to be built in the Eastern Shore Centre development. But Sonya Cole of Cole Properties LLC said she and her husband, Frank “Butch” Cole, expect closing in April on property they are buying in the center. The $4.6 million project’s groundbreaking could come the following week, she said.

In February, the Coles got the green light from the Spanish Fort Planning Commission for their plans for a bowling alley on a parcel on Eastern Shore Boulevard south of Arlington Apartments. The couple owns Gulf Bowl in Foley.

The 35,000-square-foot facility planned in Spanish Fort, which would employ about 45 people, is expected to include an arcade, pool tables and a restaurant and grill along with a 24-lane bowling alley.

“We’re just so excited. Everything’s coming into place,” Cole said.
