Don’t Toss Expired Coupons

Frances | July 28, 2010

img_8705

The first of the month can be a sad day for “coupon ladies & gentlemen” across the country. This is the day when the majority of coupons have expired. Millions of dollars in coupons are tossed in the trash.

If you have been to our Free Frugal Fairhope Coupon Workshops you have heard us talk about another use for those expired coupons. Military bases overseas can use expired coupons in their commissary for up to 6 months after the expiration date.

We have spent some time overseas, and we can tell you from personal experience it is not cheap. The military bases commissary offers some discounts that can help with the grocery cost but the cost of living in general is expensive. Like those of us living state side grocery costs are soaring with no end in sight, so every little bit counts.

Sending coupons overseas is pretty simple and your are sending the package to a U.S. territory so doesn’t require extra international postage.  You can get all the instructions including how and which base to adopt at the Overseas Coupon Program, www.ocpnet.org.

Here are a few tips from the site:

  • Sort your coupons by food and non food (we especially liked the calorie tip)
  • We placed our coupons in two Ziploc bags (see photo)
  • Don’t send anything that has expired over 2 months, by the time it gets there they may not be able to use it
  • Keep the package open until you get to the post office in case it is cheaper to send your package by parcel post
  • Don’t forget about completing the customs form
  • Tally the coupons value by weight or counting the values (optional)

There are several bases to adopt and the site is self serving. Fill out an on line form telling them how much you donated and the base the coupons were sent. This helps them keep track of what base is in need.

We have saved all of our expired coupons from this year and this month will be our first experience with shipping expired coupons overseas. We plan to send out a shipment of expired coupons every two months. Our next shipment will be in April. If you are interested in joining us in the Frugal Fairhope Expired Coupons Drive, send an email to Frances @ Frugal Fairhope .com (no spaces) and we will send you the details of the drop off. All coupons must already be clipped, sorted, and placed in Ziploc bags to be mailed.

Buying White Envelopes

Frances | July 27, 2010

Are you utilizing the sneak peeks we post on Frugal Fairhope?  Yes, it is nice to know not to buy something when it will be going on sale next week. Waiting that one more week could mean saving a lot of money. We think the most important and useful tool of sneak peeks is the ability to find coupons before the sale. With just a couple days sneak peek you could find coupons and have them shipped to you. We have talked about some of the coupon clippers on the right side bar but don’t forget about eBay!

For example are you looking for the coupons for the Cascadian Farms Granola bars? You could find a coupon or two here but that may not satisfy you or your stockpile. You can find them super cheap on eBay; click the link below to follow our examples.

Cascadian Farm Coupons

Sounds crazy, buy a white envelope with coupons??? In our humble opinion it beats paying $2 for a Sunday paper (in our area) and you get exactly what you need; not a lot of coupons you won’t use.

Check it out the auction for 12 -$.75 granola bars for only $.99!

Our choice would be the 15 - $.75 coupons for $3.89 (Buy It Now). You are getting $14.25 in value for only $3.89, that is $.26 a coupon gaining $.50 for each coupon. We know from the Frugal Fairhope Sneak Peek that Publix will have the Cascadian Farms Bars on sale B1G1 for around $4 (Fairhope Publix, $3.99 in Florida). So let’s break this deal down using the eBay coupons:

15 Cascadian Farm Bars B1G1 $4 = $30
-Use 15 $.75 coupons = $11.25
-Use $5 off $25 Rite Aid
Coupon cost $3.89+ $.99 shipping
Final Price: $1.24 each

As you can see you can get a fantastic deal on the granola bars by using the coupons you found on eBay.

We know what you are probably thinking, most coupons state “void if sold”. Why are there so many coupons out there “for sale” if they are void? You’re not, you are buying the white envelope and you are paying someone to clip, collect, and organize those coupons.

Think about this for a minute, if you purchase a Sunday newspaper are you not “buying” coupons?
