Pottery Barn Kids Bargains

| September 28, 2012

Pottery Barn is one of our favorite places to shop, expensive but it is our favorite. If Frugal Fairhope had a decorating style everything in Pottery Barn would work for us. Just move our kitchen in and we would be at home. While we love Pottery Barn we haven’t paid too much attention due to Pottery Barn Kids due to the prices until now.  We were shopping in one of the specialty stores in this area and notice a cute birthday gift for The Little One. The price tag was well over $40 for this gift. In normal Frugal Fairhope fashion we went home found the product online for around $30 (with free shipping) at Pottery Barn Kids. We love to buy locally but $10 is $10 and we also remember that we had redeemed a $25 gift card from Pottery Barn Kids several months ago from MyPoints.

Ding Ding Ding, Frances does it again, right? Nope, there is more, we used our MyPoints link and got 2 points per $1 (gift card did not reduce the points).

There is more…

We received the package within 3 days and received this $10 off $11 Glove Box coupon! So back to MyPoints, then to Pottery Barn for more (more MyPoints. We picked up a package of mustache (for the Fairhope Farm carnival) and two of these adorable musical instruments for The Little Ones gift closet (because there is no way we are listing to this all day). :-D It cost us $2 and some change.

There is more…

We got the package last night and you wouldn’t believe what we received, another $10 off $11 Glove Box coupon! So back to MyPoints and Pottery Barn Kids we go. Now we are eying those Mini Fancy Pals to add to the gift closet.

We are curious how long this is going to last and will we eventually run out of $11 items to buy?

Curious?
Stay tuned for details on the Fairhope Farm carnival we are having. We will be posting photos on the Fairhope Farm website (still under construction) and Frugal Fairhope Pinterest.

Save Money on Textbooks

| August 22, 2012

Last semester we saved over 70% of our textbooks cost by using this site. Our biggest text book cost saving tip is to rent your books. The cost of rental not only was significantly less than what we would have paid for a book but the shipping to us and from us was FREE!

It has been our experience that even if you buy a used book, chances are you will not be able to sell it at the end of the semester. The difference between buying and selling at the end of the year was more than the renting the book and we were not stuck with a textbook to clutter our shelves.

If you decide to rent your textbooks, save yourself some time and save the original packaging for the book; that way you don’t have to search for a box, just print the free shipping label (they remind you by email), tape to the package and drop the package off at a local UPS store/drop off site.

We have heard that some of our readers have saved money on college textbooks using sites like AbeBooks and Chegg which are fantastic sites that are ALL pulled by CampusBooks. CampusBooks pulls the prices from these sites and others around the internet, they even pull Barnes & Noble and Amazon pricing to give you the best price for your individual book (new, used, or rented).

Do a search and see how much money you can save.

We found ISBN 9780495557920 for $101 (used) on Amazon. Not a bad price considering this book is over $150 at a book store. There are additional discounts with the use of SWAGBUCKS and MyPointsbut that just wasn’t good enough for us so in Frugal Fairhope Style the deal gets better.

Using CampusBooks we found this for $46.45 (rented for 125 days) or $56.97 (purchased)!

You can buy, sell or rent your textbooks on CampusBooks, they even offer coupons for additional discounts on the already fantastic prices.

How do Easy Rebates and Staples Rewards work?

Easy Rebate – This is a rebate given by mail in the form of a Visa Prepaid card or a check. This Visa card can be used anywhere that accepts Visa cards. Information from the receipt must be submitted on line in order to qualify for the rebate. This is very “easy” to do, no need to send in your receipts by mail it is all done on line. Submit two things from your receipt when you get home. Easy!

Staples Rewards - Earn 10% back by mail in form of a store credit/check when you purchase qualified purchases, ink and toner, case and ream paper and Copy & Print Center purchases. This credit/check can only be used at Staples. “Staples Rewards are mailed within 30 days of the end of the calendar quarter. Redeem your rewards online at staples.com, over the phone at 1-800-333-3330 or in any Staples store by the expiration date”. This does not require you to go on line to apply for the rewards. The rewards are tied to your rewards card and are credited automatically if you use your rewards card at the time of purchase. No receipts to submit, automatically will be credited to your account and mailed.

“You can recycle ANY ink or toner cartridges, up to 10 per calendar month per customer and receive $2 back in Staples Rewards per cartridge. Limit one Staples Rewards account per address. We will recycle additional cartridges but rewards will only be issued for 10 per calendar month per customer. Your Ink Recycling reward will arrive each month, separately from your standard Staples Rewards statement.”

We prefer the Staples Rebate, but do not have a problem with the Staples Rewards. We use our Staples Rewards to purchase toner and sometimes turn it back into a Staples Rebate.

Cutting Cell Phone Bill

| July 26, 2012

You may have heard Dave Ramsey say “live like no else so later you can live like no one else”. We have “lived like no one else” and now we still “living like no one else”, honestly because we like it.

In the past we have talked about cable and how we have not had cable for more years that we can count and do not miss it or want it. Now was the time to look at our cell phone bill. We have finally had enough of paying $80 a month ($960 a year) to a cell phone company for something that we can get for $3 a month (less than $70 a year)! No we didn’t sign up for one of those government cell phone packages, which is fine if you do qualify.

Keep in mind that we don’t use text messaging or internet on our cell phones.  If you want this type of service this may not work for you.

Here is how we did it:

We started making the transfer a couple months ago when we realized that we are only 2 months away from our cell phone contract ending. It cost us $40 to cancel our cell phone service 2 months early. If you want to keep your phone number, don’t go out and cancel your service without getting a replacement phone.

Our first step was to set up a new free home phone with Skype (www.Skype.com). Along with a free home phone (calling out), anyone can have a video conference with anyone with internet connection and Skype for free (fantastic for military families). We asked one of our family members to download Skype as well and now The Little One can see the family member as well as talk to them. We found a clearance USB phone to plug into our laptop instead of using the laptop speaker to make the phone calls clearer.

We went the extra step and it cost us $30 a YEAR and $2.99 a month to get a home phone number through Skype. We actually never had a home phone number. This also has a free answering machine and caller id so you will not miss a call.

We purchased a $9.99 TracFone phone and a $29.99/90 day phone card from Walmart. The TracFone we purchased doubles all minutes we buy in the future. So we bought 60 minutes turned into 120 minutes and the phone has additional coupon codes for even more minutes. We keep this phone with us in the vehicle for emergencies. This phone also has free caller ID, so if we get a call that is not an emergency we can call when we get home. We don’t need to be driving and talking on the phone, right? This phone will receive text messages and voice mail but that will cost you minutes if you read or listen to the messages.

We made a phone call to TracFone (which has wonderful customer service) and transferred our old phone number to the new TracFone (took a couple days).

We are less than $100 in it, and have signed up for $2.99 a month which replaces the $80 a month bill.

If you need thousands of minutes every month. The pay-as-you-go service isn’t going to be cost effective. If you need a phone for emergencies or occasional use, then it is.

We are known for thinking outside the box. Think about how you are really using your service and do you really need 1,000 minutes or more a month? Did you know that 1,000 minutes equates to about 16 hours a month? That’s a half hour of your life you can have back every day along with the savings to your pocketbook.

So what about “buying” more cell phone minutes for FREE?

Amazon has 200 minute /90 days card for $34.99 which is cheaper than Walmart.

AND!!!!!!!!

Use your 5100 of your Swagbucks to get a $50 Amazon credit and purchase your minutes for FREE! We now have 400+ minutes for FREE!
