Burkes Outlet: Children’s Clothing $.85

| November 18, 2011

Burkes Outlet: Children Clothing $.85

We paid $.85 for a pair of shorts, pants and dress up skirt at Burkes Outlet. These are not name brand clothing but great for everyday play. If we turned around and consigned these at our favorite consignment shop, Pass It On Children & Maternity Consignment Boutique , we would make money. Have to be honest we are not a loyal shopper of Burkes but after today we might stop in there from time to time to look at their clearance rack. Look for the green tags which mean 95% off plus we got another 15% off as a rewards card member on Friday.

While we are on the subject if you are expecting or looking for Christmas gifts Pass It On should be your first stop for adorable outfits and toys. They have everything you need from clothing, shoes, toys to furniture for all your Little Ones. We have always said that The Little One is a consignment kid. We absolutely refuse to pay full price for outfits that The Little One will wear and play with for 5 minutes.  We have been shopping there for over 4 years. We use Pass It On as a clothes in and clothes out store. We consign outgrown clothes then turn around and buy this seasons clothes and normally we don’t have to pay anything because we keep our consignment money on account.

If you want to stop by they are located at 23825 Highway 98 Fairhope, AL 36532, make sure say hi for me!

This was not a sponsored post and as always these are our opinions.

Where Do You Put It?

| September 12, 2011

We get this question a lot especially from those that have seen our little house. We would never claim to be “masters” of anything, especially organizing but living in a small home comes with a need to keep everything in its place. No wasted space. We have found that a larger home means you not only have more “stuff” (that you don’t use but collect) to clean but you are more likely to close the door to the “mess” instead of keeping up with the “mess”.

One of the ways we save space is to change how things are stored. This is our stockpile of dish washing detergent that is stored under the sink. Check out the size difference between placing the boxes under the sink vs placing them in Ziploc storage containers (http://www.frugalfairhope.com/95-in-target-groceries-for-8).

img_9560

img_9565

The container on the top stays open to keep it convenient to grab and go.  Once we have gone through the first container we know that it is time to start looking for another dish washing deal.

While we were going through the boxes we found a happy! $1.25 in Finish coupons.

Frugal Fairhope at the Fairhope Farmers Market

| June 30, 2011

dsc05499

Friends know that we have always worn several hats. We won’t go into the long list of the other hats we wear, there are way too many to count. We will just say that Frugal Fairhope is just the tip of the iceberg.

Make sure you join us at the Fairhope Farmers Market starting TODAY!

Thursdays, May 19th through July 7th from 3pm to 6pm.

We will be selling our “Fairhope Famous” Oatmeal Bread, our first season honey from our bees, AND our “famous” blueberry jam, and lots of other goodies. A word of caution about the jam and bread, it is very addicting. This is fresh hand made bread made this morning of the market where sometimes it is still warm. The blueberry jam comes hand picked and made from our organic 30+ year old blueberry trees. We now have the blueberry jam. If you are interested in our fresh roasted coffee ask for details.

Our plans are to be at the market every Thursday until July 7th, when the market ends.

There will be lots of other vendors at the Fairhope Farmers Market that sell fresh fruits, vegetables, local honey, flowers, plants, baked goods plus live entertainments and story times for the kids.

The market starts at 3pm on the vacant lot behind the Fairhope Public Library, corner of Bancroft and Magnolia.

One of the most common questions we get is how to save money on produce.

Farmers Markets are the perfect place for getting a great deals on fresh home grown produce for your family. Participating in your local farmers market, not only will you get great deals on fresh produce but you will be helping your local farmers.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Can It Really Be This Difficult To Use a Coupon?

| June 22, 2011

We get emails on a daily basis how couponers are having difficulty with stores when using a coupon. Some local and some not so local.

Here is a recent news article we ran across from Fox 12 in Boise, Idaho that shocking to us, what really worried us was the manager of the Walmart who “slapped her hand away” and she had her 16 year old daughter with her. Keep in mind there are always two sides to a story and the news doesn’t report both sides and they are trying to sell you the news.

Boise, Idaho -- She was banned from every Walmart in the United States for life, and it was all because of an argument over coupons.

April Cuevas says Walmart has started “cracking down” on extreme couponers like herself who want to use coupons from other stores to save money.

Cuevas says she was told that Walmart’s “Ad Match” policy had changed late last week, and asked to speak with a store manager so she could better understand why. She decided to record the interchange — which quickly became an argument — with her iPhone.

She says the action wasn’t welcomed by the Walmart manager, who slapped her hand away and told her to pay the full price of her groceries or leave.

Which she did.

That’s when things got weird.

“I didn’t notice them following me at first until my 16 year-old daughter said, ‘Well, mom they’re following us,’” Cuevas said.

Cuevas claims that a plain-clothes Walmart employee chased her through the parking lot demanding that she return to the store because she had committed a crime.

She drove to a nearby gas station and called police.

“She said, ‘You’re leaving the scene of a crime,’” Cuevas reported.

“And I didn’t know I was banned from Walmart for life within the United States until the cop told me that,” Cuevas continued, explaining that somehow the Walmart staff had called Nampa police before she did.

April says she wonders if it was the argument, the use of coupons, or the iPhone video that got her banned from the store.

She suspects it was the video.

Her husband, Rennie Cuevas, suspects it was the recording as well.

“She wasn’t doing anything wrong. She paid for her food like she was supposed to and she left,” Rennie said.

April’s husband says he’s worried that Walmart might try to ban him, too, just for speaking out and questioning the store’s policies. He says that consequence would cost their family hundreds of dollars because the couple shops at Walmart almost every day.

They even have a special coupon book they use, divided into separate sections and filled with hundreds of coupons.

“With this economy, we have to save every dime to be able to do anything,” Cuevas said.

Channel 12 asked Nampa’s Walmart management staff why April was banned for life and if it was because of coupons or video recording or otherwise.

They supplied us with a 1-800 number for corporate media relations. The number hasn’t answered April’s questions.

“Well, I want to know why they kicked me out of the store nationwide, for one thing,” she said. “I didn’t do anything wrong and I also would like to go back to Walmart.”

Here is an email we received from a reader who was going to be “charged for using coupons”.

I had an experience at the Saraland wal greens that I wanted to warn my fellow couponers about. I read your post about walgreens and I just thought it might be helpful.

I went in Saturday and purchase 39.00 worth of Gillette products.( the ad stated that if you buy 30.00 you get 10.oo in RR, but because I used a coupon the manager told me that I would not get my RR. So I told him okay I wanted to get my money back and I would do something else. He informed me that I would not get all of my money back because I had used my coupon. I explained to him that the coupon took off a certain amount and I only wanted the exact amount that I gave him. He never said another word did the refund ( And I was really nice about the whole thing) and as he started counting my money back his refund amount was less than the amount I gave him. I told him no that is not right, I gave you 35.00 and I dont think that 28 is close to the same amount, he informed me that was the charge for using coupons! I developed an attitude really quick at this point and explained to him that I did not have anything that belonged to walgreens and I was not going to just give him money for coming there to shop. He turned around and gave me the amount tendered in the first transaction, he kept the merchandise and I left. I might add this is not the first time I have had trouble with the saraland store. I went to mobile and had not problem using my coupons on the exact same transaction. The manager was nice and polite and I just wonder if it might be the individual store managers that enter the information that causes these problems. He had a problem with coupons and I just want you to know that Saraland does not have coupon friendly stores that I have found expect the Rite Aid. They are nice but are always out of stuff. Thanks for all you do to help us. You are a household name and we do REALLY APPRECIATE you and your hard work to help us all. May God continually to bless and give you wisdom in all you do

Our advice? “Be nice no matter what” (Thanks Mamo) but that doesn’t mean be a doormat. Stand up for your rights as their customer, just be nice about it. Bring out your store coupon policy, ask to speak to a manager, if the issue is not resolved leave the groceries and call the store manager when you get home, if the issue is still not resolved, go to another store maybe even another chain depending on where you live. No coupon or deal is worth a hassle and we would rather drive 20 minutes out of our way to do our shopping then put up with the “abuse” that some of us couponers get.

Is this coupon legit?

| April 20, 2011

If we had published this post yesterday we would have warned you that a coupon that

  • prints from a bricks link (legit),
  • has a limit of two prints (legit),
  • prints the manufacture code (legit),
  • prints two bar codes per coupon (legit),
  • and comes from a reputable company (legit)

has now been “deemed counterfeit”.

CLICK HERE to see the PDF of the coupon details from the Coupon Information Center (www.cents-off.com).

What is interesting is that this coupon is no longer posted on their Counterfit Fraud List so there would be no way to find it if you didn’t have the above link.

So is this coupon legit? We have no idea so we have sent an email to the CIC in hopes that they will answer this question. We will report back if/when we hear from them. Could Johnson & Johnson pulled this coupon and reported it as fraudulent? Can manufactures do that? We hope that the CIC will get back with this on these questions, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, remove this coupon from your binders so we don’t take the risk. Some stores follow the CIC list and will post the coupons from the Counterfeit Fraud List so this coupon could have been flagged by the store even though it is no long on the list.

We thought we would take this time to remind you of the following:

  • NEVER copy coupons, this is fraud which means jail time and fines when you get caught.
  • Coupons for Free products will not come in a pdf or Word document that has unlimited prints. Think about this for a minute, why would manufactures issue a coupon that can be used over and over again for free products? They would go out of business in a weeks time.

If you suspect a coupon check the CIC site at www.cents-off.com to check their pdf files.

What you do today effects all of us tomorrow.

Don’t copy or use fraudulent coupons, please!

Frances Frugal Fairhope Tip: Rolling or Not

| March 31, 2011

Rolling your CVS Extra Care Bucks (ECBs) from week to week is by far the better way to get the greatest amount of savings for your dollar. ECBs are basically store credit that you can use to purchase almost anything at CVS. Rolling ECBs simply means to pay for something with ECBs and get ECBs back. Here is an example of what we mean by rolling your ECBs. Let’s say the CVS has Bausch & Lomb on sale for $2.99 this week and if you purchase this you will receive $2.99 in ECBs.

Bausch & Lomb Multipurpose Solution 2-oz $2.99 Get $2.99 ECBs

The next week CVS has Complete Multipurpose on sale for $7.99 and if you purchase this you will receive $7.99 in ECBs.

Complete Multipurpose Solution $7.99 Get $7.99 ECBs

Here is how this deal would work between the two weeks:

1st Transaction (this week)
Bausch & Lomb Multipurpose Solution $2.99

Out of Pocket: $2.99
Receive $2.99 ECBs

2nd Transaction (next week)
Complete Multipurpose Solution $7.99

-Use $2.99 in ECBs from 1st Transaction
Out of Pocket: $5
Receive $7.99 ECBs

As you can see we used the ECBs from the first transaction to pay down the second transaction out of pocket and received additional ECBs, this is rolling.

Sometimes you may find that you get busy and while ECBs have a three week expiration date, life sometimes takes over and you may not have time to roll these over into another deal or there is just not anything you need. If you decided to not roll your ECBs, you are still getting your money’s worth and more. Here’s how:

1st Transaction
Bausch & Lomb Multipurpose Solution $2.99
Out of Pocket: $2.99
Receive $2.99 ECBs

2nd Transaction
4 Bumble Bee Albacore B1G1 $2.29
-$2.99 in ECBs from 1st Transaction
Out of Pocket: $1.59 or $.40 each

As you can see you are still getting the Bausch & Lomb for free and we used the $2.99 from the 1st transaction to pay for tuna the next week. Of course it is better if you can roll the ECBs into something that will give you more ECBs but you don’t have to do this.

Stockpiling Review

| March 27, 2011

Thanks Reader P… for sending us a peek inside their pantry under a staircase. Reader P… has place expiration dates on all the products so that their family of two will know what to use first. What a fantastic idea to use the green labels, we love it!

image

Stockpiling is a sure fire way to save money on groceries. The value of the dollar decreases and the cost of groceries are going up, WEEKLY.

What is stockpiling? Stockpiling is building up a stock of products that are on sale that your family uses. For example, if your family eats Ragu spaghetti sauce ($4 a jar) a couple times a month and you found the jars on sale for $.34 a jar. It would not make sense to buy only one jar and pay full price next month.

Why? Stockpiling extend the sale of the items you buy and use every month. You are in complete control of what you pay for an item, not the retailers. You will no longer have to pay full price for items you use on a regular basis.

Disaster. Not only does stockpiling help you pay less for things you buy every month but you will be prepared for any natural disasters (hurricanes in our area) or unnatural disasters (job loss).

Basics of a stockpile. Here is a list of items that you should start stockpiling. There maybe others depending on what your family needs. You may want to add the not so basic things, for example Glade Air Freshers. If you use them and they go on sale, by all means add them to your stockpile.

  • Paper Towels
  • Paper Plates and Cups (these come in hand during a hurricane)
  • Dishwasher Detergent
  • Dish Soap
  • Cleaning Products
  • Razors
  • Laundry Soap
  • Hand Soap
  • Shampoo, Conditioner, and Gel
  • Toothpaste, Toothbrush and Mouthwash
  • Frozen Foods
  • Canned Goods (Tuna, Peanut Butter)
  • Batteries
  • Light Bulbs
  • Candles and Matches
  • Pet food
  • Plastic and Aluminum wrap
  • Trash and Storage bags (Ziploc)
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Formula and baby products
  • Cereal
  • Dressings and Condiments
  • Cooking Oil
  • Coffee and Tea
  • Oatmeal
  • Pasta and Rice
  • Juice
  • Frozen Foods (if you have an extra freezer)

There is no room. We hear this a lot, there is no room in my house. Well, for those of you who know us, if we can find room you can. :-) You decide the size of your stockpile, it can be as big as your garage or the top shelf in your pantry. Look around your house,  there is a top shelf in a clothing closet or in your kitchen that you are not using or can you move some kitchen appliances around to make room. If you are still not convinced send us a photo of your opened kitchen cabinets and we will work on it together. Think about this, what’s worth more, that shelf of shoes that you have not worn in 5 or more years or rolls of paper towels that you bought for a fraction of the cost?

Where to put it? Here are some ideas on where to put the stockpile.

  • Under the bed in plastic containers
  • Coat closet
  • Take mixes out of their boxes and storing them in plastic shoe size containers (cut & tape the instructions to the bags).
  • Laundry room (install a cabinet or wire shelf)
  • Kids closet shelves
  • Basement or Attic (paper towels and toilet paper)
  • Garage (only items that do not need to be in the A/C)

Share with a friend. If you can’t consume everything you buy on sale, split it with friends. Swap finding deals and split the cost. You can trade not only groceries but coupons as well. This really works well if you have a small family or you are single.

Important things to keep in mind.

  • Expiration dates – Watch the dates on the perishable items like cereals and juice.
  • Rotate – Use the oldest items first in order to avoid waste.
  • Storage and Organizing – Be careful how you store your items. Don’t store your liquid detergent above your cereals. There could be a leak. Make sure you organize the products in your home. Keep your chemicals away from the food items.
  • Don’t Get Carried Away – Remember the 1st rule of shopping, only buy what you need or what you will use. Don’t get caught up in shopping fever of finding a great deal and buy things your family won’t use.
  • Take your Time – There is no rush. Build your stockpile over time. Have fun with the hunt.

Free Theme Park Admission for Military Families

| March 24, 2011

In our humble opinion there have never been and probably never will be enough enough benefits for military personnel and their families. They sacrifice so much on a daily basis that civilians can not even imagine the sacrifices.

There is a Heroes program that offers active duty military or reserve or National Guard unit and three dependents to receive a one day complimentary admissions to the following parks.

  • SeaWorld Orlando, San Diego, or San Antonio
  • Busch Gardens Tampa Bay or Williamsburg
  • Sesame Place Langhorne, PA
  • Adventure Island Tampa

When Does the Sale Stop?

| March 22, 2011

As you may already know, most stores offer a 30 day price match policy. If you find a better price, within a certain period of time, at another store, you can take your receipt back to the store along with the store circular and get the difference. In most cases you do not have to bring the merchandise back to the store to get the refund. This also holds true for the same store sales.

We purchased a swing set from Toys R Us at $500 off the original price plus a free cottage. We got an additional 10% off for signing up for a credit card (playing with snakes, don’t do it), and we were able to use a store credit that we had been holding on to when we registered with Babies R Us years ago. This was the best deal we could find at the time… Everything is going along fine, well except for a missing bag of bolts but we won’t get into that, when we received our weekly Toys R Us eNewsletter. The same swing set went on sale for $800 off original price with Toys R Us coupon?

HAPPIES

Yes, we were able to get back over $300 on the swing set we purchased a couple weeks ago. By watching the sale of the swing set weeks after our purchase we were able to use another coupon after the sale and get the difference back.

When does the sale stop? We would say about 30-60 days after you have made the purchase. Continue to watch the store for another sale on the item that you purchased.

A word on the credit card: Yes, “we are playing with snakes” (don’t look Dave) on getting the card, don’t do this if you are not disciplined enough to cancel the card a month later. We won’t tell you what we did with the card, it was kind of fun. Dave Ramsey style!
